Newly discovered musical pieces by the renowned composer Bach have been presented and performed in the central European country for the initial occasion in over three centuries.

The nation's Minister of Culture Wolfram Weimer described the finding of the two compositions a "important event for the global music scene".

They originally drew interest of a musical scholar in 1992 when he was cataloguing historical musical documents at the Brussels archive.

The musical compositions - the Chaconne in D minor and Chaconne in G minor - were undated and without attribution. The researcher spent the subsequent thirty years working to confirm the origin of the pieces.

Memorable Concert

They were presented at the St Thomas Church in the eastern German municipality, where Bach is laid to rest and where he was employed as a music director for 27 years.

The two pieces were performed by Dutch musician the musical performer, who said he was proud to be able to perform them for the premiere in 320 years.

He said the pieces were "of a very high quality" and would be "an important addition for contemporary organ players, as they are also suitable for more compact instruments".

Historical Significance

They are believed to have been created early in Bach's career, when he was serving as an organ instructor in the community of the Thuringian town in the German region.

Mr Wollny, who is now the head of the musical archive in the municipality, said they exhibited several features particular to the musical genius.

"In terms of style, the pieces also include aspects that can be found in Bach's works from that time, but not in those of different artists," he said.

They are considered to have been written down in the early eighteenth century by one of Bach's pupils, the historical figure.

At a unveiling of the pieces, Mr Wollny said he was "99.99% sure that Bach had created the pair of works" and they have now been incorporated into the authoritative listing of his compositions.
