New Trump Doctrine Identifies Europe's Fundamental Problem: A Supposed Lack of Racism?

Throughout his initial presidency, commentators frequently advised that the former president's statements should be taken seriously instead of literally. However, subsequent events suggest that that formula may have reversed the logic.

A recently unveiled U.S. National Security Strategy coupled with a series of statements from U.S. figures, presidential allies, and Trump himself have sparked what could be one of the most profound crises for transatlantic unity, the security framework that has sustained peace and democracy in Europe since 1945.

From Burden-Sharing to Cultural Anxiety

Whereas Trump's earlier critique focused on Europe's alleged failure to pay for its own defense, his vision has now evolved into a far more alarming outlook.

Tinged with racial prejudice and a staggering contempt for Europe's political institutions and officials, he has spoken about the potential of civilizational erosion on a continent he has rarely visited and has predominantly seen from a distance.

"His recent interview lacking in clear ideological coherence is nevertheless replete with another element: the muddled anxiety of an ageing white man confronted with a changing world."

This paranoid worldview, which has already influenced harsh U.S. immigration and law enforcement approaches, now appears to be shaping Washington's prism of Europe.

A Xenophobic Thesis

According to this logic, migration from the global south leads to a weakening of European countries, rendering them "weak" under "stupid" leadership and setting the stage for their demise. It constitutes an unabashedly xenophobic ideology, with Trump and his circle explicitly endorsing far-right movements across Europe.

While the broader theme of Trump's racial rhetoric is not new, its specific implications for European security are essential to grasp.

In the view of the president and his adherents—a group that includes tech magnate Elon Musk, who recently advocated for the breakup of the EU—all statecraft is inherently transactional. But, whereas he once claimed was about burden-sharing, the new claim is that a declining Europe is fundamentally unworthy because of its embrace of diversity.

Weakening from Within

During the conversation, Trump himself connects these ideas in a form of wish-fulfillment exercise. He concedes that Russia's Vladimir Putin desires a weak Europe. Trump proclaims Europe is weak, and by publicly highlighting the rifts between the transatlantic alliance, he objectively helps Putin by actively undermining European unity—while simultaneously claiming it's not his "fault".

This dynamic is unfolding at possibly the most critical moment for Europe in decades, amid a brutal conflict in Ukraine and escalating provocations elsewhere on the continent.

As European nations cleaves ever tighter to Ukraine amid persistent threats of American abandonment, the danger is that Trump has rationalized a justifying narrative for ignoring his allies.

The European Response

This situation requires a robust reaction from European leadership. While some figures, including Germany's leader, have been forceful in their rebuttals, others—like British officials—have opted for a strategy of attempting to appease the White House.

Recently, the UK government declined to criticize the president's remarks about Europe or his latest criticism on the mayor of London.

They said, "He has a strong relationship with the U.S. president and a strong relationship with the Mayor of London, and is committed to cooperating with each to achieve better outcomes for the British public."

The undeniable truth is that Trump means his words and says them consistently. The time has come to stop pretending that things are different.
