Cameron Norrie achieved the most important success of his professional journey by rebounding from a lost first set to beat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

While he had previously defeated Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this win represents Norrie's first ever win over a reigning world number one.

"Huge. Incredibly significant for me," said Norrie, who becomes the latest British man in the record books to defeat a world No 1. "Coming back from health issues last year, I was defeated in the initial match of qualifying rounds here. I just tried to embrace my tennis in the closing months of the year. To get a win like this, it's the biggest success of my career, my initial victory over the global number one and arguably the strongest player in the tennis scene right now."

The British player, seeded 31st globally, also stopped Alcaraz's supreme run of nine finals in a row and 17 straight Masters 1000 victories, which represented the finest stretch of performances in the Spaniard's young professional path.

Contest Analysis

Alcaraz appeared to be progressing easily to a win at the start as he eased through the opening set. However, the British contender gradually battled back back into the game by serving with improved accuracy and pulling the Spaniard into lengthy, demanding exchanges. His unceasing steadiness and consistency slowly left its mark.

For much of the contest, Alcaraz performed well on serve but he found it challenging to locate his rhythm on his baseline shots. The 22-year-old appeared notably struggling striking his forehand, which has been the top weapon in the sport for much of this season, committing 29 forehand miscues and a total of 54 mistakes. Opposing him, Norrie presented his opponent very few errors, keeping up his steadiness, athleticism and power throughout while performing well on serve and choosing his moments to move into the court and strike effectively.

After struggling for an extended period due to a significant arm issue and struggles with his performance, the tennis professional dropped as low as 91st globally this year. After making the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and the French Open fourth round since then, this victory further underlines the experienced player's improvement as he seeks to return to the world's top twenty and even higher. Alcaraz, despite his remarkable achievements, is still hasn't figure out how to deliver his finest performance in indoor conditions.
